HAVEN TEAM CHALLENGE
September 19th 2009
20 teams of mixed ages, abilities and experience hit the water and roads of Oysterhaven last Saturday to take part in the `Haven Team Challenge.
Battling it out running, biking, kayaking and board paddling, teams also had to tackle four mind and bodyboggling team challenges. With a mighty crew of brilliant volunteers and staff the banter was contagious, and as the sun beat through the morning showers, it turned into a fantastic day of action packed fun for everyone involved. First team across the finish line saw the Mountain Misfits, Joe Warne and Stephen Cleary, bolt home in a superb time of 1:58hr.
However competition was fierce in the highly contested Pic' n' Mix fours event . Team Actimel and Haven Hopefuls battled it out, with Team Actimel taking the final honors in a time of 2:10hrs. Other notable performances came from the family crew Team Kensters, and the only masters Grandslam team “Na sean bhuachailli Iarthar Chorcai “(The old lads of cork). See website for full results.
Event organisers, Liz Tye and Kathy Kirwan, were thrilled with the day, “Getting such a great mix of participants, volunteers and staff together really made for a truly fantastic day out”.
Participants later reminisced the events of the day over a well earned BBQ, and with amazing support from sponsors an impressive array of prizes were on hand, leaving no one going home empty handed. Leslie Buckley, founder of the charity Haven, justified everyone's efforts as he shared the plight of Haiti and his vision for creating hope. Proceeds from the challenge all go towards Haven, and valuable funds were raised to assist the participating Haven volunteers. Check out www.havenpartnership.com for more details.
