TRAINEE INSTRUCTOR PANEL
The Panel is designed as a club environment in which 15 - 18 year olds may enjoy developing a range of skills in a variety of watersports which lead to Instructor qualifications. The Oysterhaven Centre aims to provide a pathway for each Panel member to achieve an Instructor Award over a 2-3 year period. This is done through structured training during weekends in the autumn and spring, together with intensive training during Easter. See full list of trainee courses here...
Training will focus on soft skills necessary for Instructing, such as leadership training, group control, communication skills etc, and pre-requisite skills such as First Aid and VHF training. During the summer months opportunities are provided to Panel members for work experience, assisting qualified instructors with their groups at the Centre.
While there are some training days devoted to skills coaching, a high level of personal skill is required to become an Instructor and Panel members are expected to take the initiative in developing these skills themselves. Every encouragement is given with the free use of the Centre’s equipment available to Panel members in the evenings during the summer and on Saturdays.
Many Instructors working at the Centre gained their training through the Panel, and Panel members are ideally suited for working in the Centre due to their experience of the Centre’s activities and ethos and their specific training. However membership of the Panel and completing Instructor qualifications is no guarantee of employment at The Centre and members must not expect to be automatically offered a job.
The Panel should be viewed as an enjoyable, active social environment in which to learn a range of valuable skills which may ultimately lead to an instructor qualification.
Eligibility Requirements
Ideally you will be fully familiar with our multi-activity summer camps, having participated over a number of summers, and you must have completed a skills course at the Centre in either windsurfing or sailing.
